Details
Luke Hutchison -- Anatomy of an Android App -- how to get started programming for
Android, how to find your way around an Android
project in Eclipse (what each file in a project is for), live
debugging in Eclipse -- Multi-touch on Android -- multi-touch
capabilities of current Android devices, limitations, "the
multi-touch conspiracy" -- OLED screen technology on the Nexus One
-- General Android Q&A
Luke's background: -- current PhD student in Computer Science at MIT CSAIL,
former Google intern -- Android hacker, got multi-touch scaling
working in the browser on the G1 -- have developed about five
sizeable Android apps
Greg Milette I'll cover UI layouts, Database, using the
files and R.* stuff, the speech recognition and text to speech API, and
other things that I can think of. Some areas of the Android APIs are
amazingly easy and will make you smile, some areas are depressingly
quirky and will steal away whole afternoons of time. During my talk, you
will learn how to use some these APIs so that you can more quickly
create your first app. Along the way, I'll tell a sad, yet hopeful
programming story.
Greg's background:
Greg Milette has been a software engineer in the defense industry for 7
years. One day, he acquired a G1 Android phone. One hour later, he
created "hello world." 3 months later, he entered an app into the
Google's Developer Challenge and placed 19th in the Lifestyle app
category.

Meeting ID: 590-538-451
If you've been curious about GWT but haven't yet
taken the dive, now is the best time. With the release of GWT 2.0,
developing rich ajax applications for the browser is easier than ever.
Development mode browser support will allow use of even more of your
favorite debugging tools like Firebug enable real time preview of the
look and feel of your app exactly as it will appear to your users.
UiBinder eliminates boilerplate and speeds development by letting you
cleanly separate design and layout from functionality. Layout panels
provide a new option for making the most efficient use of the browser
area by providing a fluid, resizable layout container.
He will
give a brief review of what GWT is and why it works the way it does,
followed by real examples of how the new features make GWT even more
powerful. This talk will be primarily aimed at potential new users of
GWT.

The next Mass GTUG meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 12th at 6 pm.
Meeting Agenda
Introduction
Google App Engine (Python version)
Open Discussion
It is not an introduction to web programming or a Google Apps session. It is assumed you know server-side web development — perhaps ASP, JSP or PHP. Please note, this session will be based on Python.
Still, it is not a programming language session — the emphasis will be
on learning the available APIs which are common between Java and Python
on GAE. The idea is to familiarize everyone with the basic App Engine
APIs.
We will create a toy bank and be able to transfer "money" between accounts.
We
are meeting on MIT campus in Cambridge. The conference room is in the
building W92 at 304 Vassar St, Cambridge and the building belongs to
MIT IS&T.
The
building (red brick front building) is near Hyatt hotel (Memorial Dr)
and MIT Police station. From Kendall "T" station, it is a quite a bit
of walk. There is a free shuttle called "TECH SHUTTLE"
which stops next to MIT COOP and goes around the campus and drops you
right in front of W92 building. The stop is Amesbury St/W92. There are other
shuttles which go to other parts of campus but only TECH SHUTTLE comes
to this building. See TECH SHUTTLE schedule and real time tracker.
Metered Parking/W92 Parking is available around the building (free
after 6 PM). If you prefer to walk from Kendall, walk on Main st
towards Vassar st, take a left onto Vassar st and keep walking (15 min
walk) until you cross the MIT police station on right. The red brick
building is on left side of the police station.
